Through the years, the role s of coaches have changed dramatically and athletic department environments have changed even more. It is obvious that many coaches are painfully struggling with the incongruencies of winning vs. losing, the perception of success vs. failure, and making a positive impact toward the personal growth and development of student-athletes. Today, coaches are facing many new expectations in regard to their job responsibilities -- often without the educational or experiential skill base to succeed. Few coaches are as trained or competent as they need to be in all of the diverse areas of athletics management required at all levels. Are our coaches prepared to juggle at the expert level? Can they successfully manage academics, recruiting, budgets, motivation, marketing, travel, equipment, media, mentoring, dealing with students who are athletes, and handle the pressure to coach a team to a winning season?
Yet, with good training and perspective, we can assist coaches at all levels to help themselves. The Coaches Academy (CA) offers a certification format that allows a coach the opportunity to learn relevant skills and strategies and be able to implement them into her current and potential situations. This style of learning, lead by faculty mentors, assists in peer interaction, network development and career retention.
